WordPress Maintenance: What You Should Be Getting Every Month

An unmaintained WordPress site does not stay still — it decays. Plugins age into security holes, PHP versions fall out of support, backups quietly stop running, and one day the site is slow, broken or worse. A care plan is the small monthly cost that prevents the large emergency invoice.

What a real care plan includes

  • Core, theme and plugin updates applied on a schedule, with a quick visual check of the key pages afterwards — not just clicked in the dashboard and hoped for.
  • Backups that are tested. Daily or weekly, stored off-site, with a restore test at least quarterly. A backup nobody has restored is a rumour, not a backup.
  • Security monitoring: malware scanning, login hardening, and a watch on the plugin set for anything abandoned by its author.
  • Uptime and speed monitoring with an alert when either moves — cache silently disabling is a classic.
  • PHP and server currency: keeping the site on a supported PHP version (8.2 or 8.3 in 2026) and the hosting on current software.
  • A short monthly report: what was updated, what was blocked, what the speed numbers did, what we recommend next.

What it should cost

In the South African market, a genuine plan with the above runs roughly R500 to R3,000 a month depending on site size and response commitments. Below that range, something on the list is not actually being done — usually the backup testing and the report.

Five signs your site is being neglected

  1. The footer or a plugin shows a copyright or version years old.
  2. Nobody can tell you when the last backup was restored.
  3. Updates are “done” but the changelog shows nothing in six months.
  4. The site has no staging or rollback path.
  5. Your “developer” is unreachable and there is no documentation or admin access in your name.

Do it yourself or pay?

If you have a confident internal person, the list above is a checklist they can follow monthly. If not, buy the plan — and insist on the report, because the report is the proof. Our website service includes care-plan options, and an audit will tell you honestly whether your current site is worth maintaining or worth replacing.

FAQ

Can updates break my site?

Occasionally, which is exactly why updates belong on a staging copy first — a competent plan includes that step.

Is a maintenance plugin enough?

It automates updates but not judgement: compatibility, backup restores, security response and speed regressions still need a person.
