How to Plan a Month of Social Content in One Afternoon

A Month of Social Content, Planned in One Afternoon

Social media fails in small businesses for one operational reason: content is decided daily, by whoever is free, under pressure. The fix is not more creativity — it is a four-hour monthly session that decides everything at once. This is the process we run for clients, and it works just as well in-house.

Hour 1 — Pick three pillars, not ten

Choose the three subjects your business can credibly own (for a marketing agency: proof of work, practical education, and behind-the-scenes). Every post in the month must serve one pillar. Ten pillars is a content strategy for a media company, not a business.

Hour 2 — Fill a 4×3 grid

Twelve slots: three per week, one per pillar per week. Write only the idea sentence for each (“photo of the new signage we installed + one line about why size mattered”). Do not write captions yet.

Hour 3 — Match assets to ideas

For each idea, note what exists (a photo from a job, a screenshot, a client message you can quote with permission) and what is missing. The missing list is your shoot or design list — usually four to six items, batched into one session. See our content creation service for how a single shoot day feeds six weeks.

Hour 4 — Approve, schedule, and protect the hour

Get sign-off on the grid in the same meeting, schedule everything, and diary next month’s session before anyone leaves. The single biggest predictor of consistency is whether the next session is already in the calendar.

The two rules that keep it alive

  • One reactive slot per week left empty for news, a client win or a trend — planned flexibility beats rigid calendars.
  • Captions are written in one 45-minute batch the week before publishing, never the morning of.

Measuring whether the month worked

At month end, record three numbers: enquiries from social, best-performing pillar by saves and shares, and follower growth. Three numbers, ten minutes, and next month’s grid gets smarter. If you would rather hand the whole loop to someone, that is exactly what managed social media covers.

FAQ

How many platforms should this cover?

Two at most to start; the grid is per-platform but ideas can be adapted across both.

What if we have no photos?

Then hour 3’s missing list is your priority: one shoot solves months of gaps — phones and natural light are enough for most service businesses.
