How Much Does a Website Cost in South Africa in 2026?
“How much for a website?” is the question every South African agency dreads, because the honest answer is a range and the range is wide. But ranges are not useless — what is useless is signing a quote without understanding what drives it. Here is the picture as it stands in 2026.
Realistic ranges for a South African business website
- Single-page or brochure site (1–5 sections): roughly R8,000–R25,000. Fine for a presence, weak for search.
- Standard business site (5–12 pages): roughly R25,000–R70,000. This is where most SMEs should land: proper service pages, analytics, SEO foundations.
- Custom or e-commerce build: roughly R70,000–R250,000+, depending on integrations, catalogue size and payment gateways.
- Ongoing costs: hosting and domain R1,000–R6,000 a year, plus a care plan of R500–R3,000 a month if you want updates, backups, security and someone to call when something breaks.
What actually drives the price
Three things, in order: content (who writes and photographs it), functionality (bookings, payments, integrations), and performance and SEO work (caching, image pipelines, schema, analytics). The third is the one most often cut to hit a budget — and it is the one that determines whether the site earns anything back.
Five questions to ask before you sign
- Who owns the domain, the hosting and the code at the end?
- What Lighthouse mobile performance score will you guarantee, and will you show me the test?
- Is GA4 and Google Search Console setup included, or extra?
- How many pages of real, keyword-mapped content are in the price?
- What happens in month two — who maintains it, and at what cost?
If a supplier cannot answer those five clearly, keep looking. A website is a multi-year asset; the cheapest quote is frequently the most expensive decision.
